Driving theory test
The theory test for car drivers and motorcyclists was introduced by the DSA in July 1996. It is designed to improve the safety of newly qualified riders and drivers by making them think carefully about the right attitudes needed to drive safely on today's busy roads and reduce the risk of accidents.
You must take the Theory Test before you take the Practical. Before you can take your theory test you will need to make sure you have a valid provisional license. . You can apply for a
provisional driving license quickly and easily online or by completing the D1 application form available at most post offices.
In the test, you will have to answer 35 multiple choice questions within 40 minutes. The pass mark requires that you get at least 30 correct. Most questions have just one answer, but some have more than one. Most questions give four options, but some give 5 and a few give 6. Many of the questions show pictures of road signs and road situations.
The test contains the following categories:
- Alertness
- Attitude
- Safety and your vehicle
- Safety margins
- Hazard awareness
- Vulnerable road users
- Other types of vehicle
- Vehicle handling
- Motorway rules
- Rules of the road
- Road and the traffic signs
- Documents
- Accidents
- Vehicle loading
Once you've passed your theory test, it is important to continue applying what you've learnt during your driving lessons and practice. The overall aim of introducing the test was to improve road safety for Drivers, Rider and pedestrians. This can only work if we all practice what we learn and know to be good driving technique.
Driving theory test software allows users to access driving theory test based on the questions and answers, which are currently used in the official Driving Standards Agency UK driving theory tests. After you have done the multiple choice section of the test the hazard perception part will start.
